Ok, so I just got the car on the road last night. Took it for a drive, drove it to school today. I noticed that while in gear and slowing down with my foot off the clutch and brake it makes a weird growling kind of noise. I took Nathan for a drive and he said it could be one of my driveshaft bearings but it sounds like its coming from the left rear? I'm pretty sure it's not a wheel bearing because it only does it while in gear and foot off the clutch and brake. I did notice that sometimes you can hear a similar noise over bumps? Anyone got any ideas lol?

Tried to explain best I can.

Thanks,

Greg.

I've been there. start with the prop shaft, hanger bearings, or hangers themselves, Or could be in the rear diff. Pinion preload is too low or I found on mine, seems the ring gear has a very small amount of run out. I would start with the prop shaft first for sure. Good luck.

Is this something that will be expensive because I dont have a lot of money right now.

I've had rear wheel bearings act like that before. Pick the rear end up and check for play (up and down/in and out). If you have the time, disconnect the drive shaft at the outer cup. You will get a better feel of it.
The other thing to check is the rotor, is it warped or grabbing.

I will try the wheel bearing thing. I doubt its the rotor because they are pretty much new and if it was the rotor warped it would do it all the time.

If the hangers are good the two bearings inside are less than $20 ea. It is alot of work though.

Its hard to hear the noise over the computer. if it's the driveline growling noise, you may spend alot of time and work to fix it and almost every awd talon has it!

Well, once I sell my probe I may just get someone else to fix it, because I don't have a lot of time to work on it and it is now my daily driver lol. I know it's hard to hear a noise over the computer but I tried to explain as best I could lol.

Thanks for the help guys!

Do you guys think this could be a symptom of a bad engine mount? Because the engine and tranny do flex quite a bit and maybe it's enough to throw the driveshaft out of phase?

Greg. try not to take this the wrong way.

You have an 18 year old car that may or may not of had any drive-train work done since it left the factory.

It could be anything from the clutch to the rear wheel bearings and yes, worn engine mounts could make it sound worse.

It's great that you have questions and want to learn more about your new ride, but it is impossible to diagnose this over the internet.

Bring the car out to the shop or take it to any reputable garage and you will have your answer in 15 mins or less and most including us won't charge you for the 15 mins.

Don't worry, I won't take it the wrong way, I understand it's hard to diagnose a noise on the internet I just didn't want to take it somewhere and someone charge me some rediculous amount to find a noise.
I can bring it to you guys on friday around 10:30 would you be able to go for a test drive then?

Sure, plus we can put it up on the hoist and get a good look at it.

Sound good?
